About me

About me

I am a humanistic counsellor/psychotherapist.  This means we will work together on what is important to you, your values, and how you make sense of and cope with your experience.

I work integratively, which means I combine a range of approaches to suit you.  I draw mainly on person-centred therapy, gestalt therapy, and transactional analysis, and also use aspects of mindfulness, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), solution focused brief therapy, narrative therapy, attachment theory, psychosocial development theory, mental imagery, and arts-based and creative methods.

I currently work as a counsellor in a large hospice in the South East, and for a charity supporting people recovering from drug and alcohol addiction.  I have also worked as a counsellor for a charity supporting carers.  I am currently a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Older People Expert Reference Group.

In addition to my accredted training with the Wealden Psychology Institute, I have undertaken additional professional development on many issues, including loss and bereavement, working with death, adult development, trauma, suicide, safeguarding vulnerable people, stress management, pain, autism, dementia, and attachment.

In my wider work, I undertake research into a range of issues around mental wellbeing.  In 2014, I co-authored a book on mental ill health – What’s Normal Anyway? – which included detailed accounts of what it is like to experience depression, anxiety, suicidal feelings and behaviours, obsessive-compulsive disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, bipolar disorder, and eating disorders.  I am currently co-authoring a book on the impact of child sexual abuse on adult survivors, which is due to be published in early 2019.  You can find out more about my research work here.
