Research and innovation
I undertake research into mental wellbeing, loneliness, identity and belonging, dementia, substance misuse, community and citizenship, and work with a range of organisations to help improve services and support, including the NHS, local authorities, and charities such as Mind and Alzheimer’s Society.
I am a Visiting Professor at the School of Social Work, Care and Community at the University of Central Lancashire, and I am Co-Director of the Centre for Citizenship and Community. I have also been a university lecturer, and have taught on psychology, mental health social work, and criminology courses.
Prior to training as an integrative humanistic therapist, I was Director of Research at the Royal Society of Arts, and have also worked in community development, and for consultancies, local government, and national media.

Recent projects
- Working for NHS England to support clinical commissioning groups and local authorities develop person-centred care for people with dementia and their carers.
- Working with Mind to help local people with mental health problems experience a greater sense of belonging and participation in their communities.
- Working for a clinical commissioning group to develop community-based ways of supporting carers.
- Working with the Alzheimer’s Society to develop community-based, person-centred care and support for people with dementia.
- A guide for the Campaign to End Loneliness on how to identify and talk about loneliness.
- Working with a housing association to help lonely and socially isolated residents experience more connection to people and place.
